95-year-old basketball fan cheering on Creighton University in March Madness
SHAKING RIGHT NOW. WELL, CREIGHTON BASKETBALL ALL BEGINS ITS QUEST FOR A NATIONAL CHAMPIONS SHIP TOMORROW. AND PEOPLE ALL AROUND THE METRO WILL TUNE IN TO WATCH, INCLUDING SUPER FAN GEORGE JOHNSON KETV NEWSWATCH. AND SEAN MCKINNON INTRODUCES US TO THE MAN WHOSE LOYALTY TO CREIGHTON RUNS AS DEEP AS BLUE BLOOD. CREIGHTON BASKETBALL’S FIRST SEASON WAS IN 1916, AND GEORGE JOHNSON, HE’S BEEN AROUND FOR ALMOST EVERY ONE OF THEM. WHAT YEAR WERE YOU BORN? 1928. BORN AND RAISED IN OMAHA’S BENSON NEIGHBORHOOD, WHERE HE SAYS BACK THEN, EVERYBODY KNEW EVERYBODY. THIS GROWN UP KIND OF BITTER. BITTER A PLACE I DON’T THINK OVER HIS 95 YEARS. HE’S SEEN NEBRASKA’S BIGGEST CITY CHANGE A BIT. I’VE SEEN IT GROW, SEEN IT GROW A LOT. NEVER WOULD HAVE GUESSED THAT IT WAS JUST FARMLAND. THIS IS CORNFIELD. THERE IS NO PASTRIES BEYOND THE 72ND STREET. BUT WHAT’S STAYED THE SAME? OMAHA IS LOVE FOR CREIGHTON BASKETBALL WITH HIS BLUE JAYS AS A SIXTH SEED IN THIS YEAR’S NCAA TOURNAMENT. HE’S ROOTING FOR A DEEP RUN. HECK OF AN ACCOMPLISHMENT. FARM TO GET TO THE SWEET 16. AND I THINK IT’S POSSIBLE FOR HIS PREDICTION COMES FROM EXPERIENCE. THE YEARS 1945 AND YOUNG GEORGE, A THREE SPORT ATHLETE LEADING CREIGHTON PREP TWO CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THE GRIDIRON. I THINK YEAH. AND I PLAYED QUARTERBACK OF THE FOOTBALL TEAM AND I WAS THE SAFETY THE DIAMOND BASEBALL. I PLAYED FIRST BASE. AND OF COURSE, THE BASKETBALL COURT A LOT OF MEMORIES. AND FOR THE SWEAT HE POURED ALL THOSE YEARS AGO. LAST WEEK, PREP INDUCTED GEORGE INTO ITS HALL OF FAME. KIND OF BLEW ME AWAY BECAUSE I NEVER FIGURED THAT I. I WOULD ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING LIKE THIS AND HANG AROUND LONG ENOUGH. ALL GUYS COME YOUR WAY. HE WAS HONORED ON STAGE, JOINED BY HIS FOUR SONS. ALL CREIGHTON PREP MEN. REALLY MEANT A LOT TO ME TO BE ABLE TO BRING THOSE BOYS AND SAY JUST ME. FOR EVERYONE. THERE’S A LAST TIME WALKING OFF THE COURT. BUT FOR JOHNSON BLUEJAY, BASKETBALL IS THE CONSTANT CONNECTING HIM AND HIS FAMILY TO THE CITY AND TEAM. HE GREW OLD WITH EVERY YEAR. THOSE SPORTS PRETTY SOON, WHICH YOU NEVER RUN OUT OF FAMILY. THAT BEING SAID, HE’S READY FOR THE MADNESS. WE’LL SEE WHAT THEY DO. GO, JACE. GO. JASE IS RIGHT. THAT’S SEAN MCKINNON REPORTING. NOW, EVERY YEAR, GEORGE AND HIS FAMILY COMPETE IN A MARCH MADNESS BRACKE

Born in Omaha in 1928, he said back then, everybody knew everybody.

"Just growing up... couldn't have been a better place, I don't think," Johnson said.

Over his 95 years, he's seen Nebraska's biggest city change a bit.

"I've seen it grow, seen it grow a lot. Never would have guessed it. It was just farmland," he said. "This was a cornfield. There was no paved streets beyond 72nd street."

But some things have stayed the same, like Omaha's love for Creighton basketball.

With his Bluejays as a , Johnson is rooting for a deep run.

"Heck of an accomplishment for them to get to the Sweet 16, and I think it's possible for them," he said.

His prediction comes from experience.

In 1945, young Johnson was a three-sport athlete, leading his high school, Creighton Preparatory School. He played quarterback and safety on the football team, first base on the baseball team, and, he says, just about every position on the basketball team.

For the sweat he poured all those years ago, on March 6, Creighton Prep inducted Johnson into its hall of fame.

"Kind of blew me away 'cause I never figured that I would accomplish anything like that," he said. "So I guess if you hang around long enough, all kinds of things will come your way."

He was honored on stage and joined by his four sons.

"Really meant a lot to me to be able to bring those boys on stage with me," he said.

Johnson and his wife started a family, which has now grown to 50 people. They all compete in a March Madness bracket every year.

Johnson has Creighton beating UCLA in the championship.
