Iowa weather: Tracking the big weekend cooldown
We are waking up with a breeze as a cold front passed overnight.
Interactive Radar | Weather Alerts | Skycams
Expect gusts around 20 to 35 mph from the northwest through the morning with weaker winds for the afternoon and overnight. Plenty of sunshine, but cold air is settling in which will keep us in the 50s for highs. Thursday will bring more clouds and strong south winds with highs back near 60. Rain chances will be possible late Thursday and into early Friday for areas along and east of I-35.
Conditions will stay breezy but manageable until we get into the weekend. An area of low pressure will be making its way over the Midwest which will lead to showers through most of Saturday. This will also unlock the cold arctic air from the north and allow it to push southward over Iowa. We will be dropping temperatures into the evening and overnight into Sunday. Any lingering rain and moisture will be transitioning to a mix and eventually snowflakes as temperatures drop. We are starting to see more agreement with models pointing to snow chances climbing. However, accumulation chances are still remaining quite low. This is still a very touchy system and we will continue to monitor it as we get closer.
The cold will settle for a few days with hard freezes expected by Sunday and Monday morning. Afterwards, we will begin to rebound with highs back into the 50s Tuesday and Wednesday.
