Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah, has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with investigators still probing the motive behind the incident. Authorities noted that Robinson had become more political in recent years and had expressed his dislike for Kirk, even mentioning that Kirk would be on the campus where he was later shot.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox announced the arrest, saying, "Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, we got him."
Authorities reported that Robinson fired a single shot, ending Kirk's life. Cox explained that a family member of Robinson reached out to a family friend, who then contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office with information that Robinson had confessed or implied his involvement in the incident.
Robinson's father encouraged him to turn himself in after recognizing him from FBI photos that prompted a record number of tips and leads. FBI Director Kash Patel expressed gratitude, saying, "This would not have been possible without you, the media, and you, the public."
Surveillance video captured Robinson leaping nearly 15 feet from a rooftop after the shot and slipping away. Along the escape route, investigators recovered a bolt-action rifle with a mounted scope and bullet casings engraved with markings like "hey fascist, catch!" Authorities said Robinson made no secret of his dislike for Kirk, who was a powerful figure in the MAGA movement and often stirred controversy on college campuses.
Cox emphasized, "I hear all the time that words are violence. Words are not violence. Violence is violence. And there is one person responsible for what happened here and that person is now in custody."
Robinson is facing at least three charges, including murder. Investigators believe he acted alone, but the case remains open. Trump first announced Robinson's arrest on a news program, stating that Robinson should receive the death penalty. Utah's governor echoed the president's call for capital punishment. The president described Kirk as "a giant of his generation" and announced that Kirk will be awarded the posthumous Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.
