Central Iowa Water Works officials on Thursday imposed a ban on lawn watering that will remain in place until further notice for more than 600,000 residential and commercial customers the regional water authority serves.CIWW issued the area's first-ever ban on lawn watering after seeing the highest levels of nitrates in its river water since 2013. The officials said water is currently safe to drink, but too-high levels of nitrate can be dangerous for pregnant women and infants.While CIWW works to treat the water to reduce nitrate pollutants to a safe level, Des Moines metro residents’ demand is higher than the amount they are able to treat, making it essential for users to limit nonessential uses like lawn watering.
