As the holiday season rolls into the Des Moines metro, the city transforms into a vibrant wonderland filled with festive cheer and exciting events for all ages. From dazzling light displays to charming Christmas markets and spirited performances, Des Moines offers a magical experience that brings the community together. This attraction is meant to be enjoyed on foot, by bicycle, or from your vehicle and is completely free and open to the public.Winter Wonderlights displays are located along Southwest Third and Southwest Maple streets in Ankeny, and can be accessed by vehicle from South Ankeny Boulevard and West First Street. Dec. 7-Dec. 31: Beaverdale Holiday Lights, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Along Ashby and Wallace Avenues, off of Beaver Avenue, you can find dramatic displays of holiday lights!
For decades residents in this part of the Beaverdale Neighborhood have gone all out for their annual light show. Visitors can also tune in to a radio station to listen to music synched up with the light displays.

Dec. 13-22: "A Christmas Carol" at Stoner Theater |
Penny-pinching and bad-tempered old miser Ebenezer Scrooge goes on the adventure of his life, from his past to his present and beyond and learns that the value of gold will never equal that of genuine love for his fellow men. The classic holiday tale returns to the Stoner Theatre courtesy of Iowa State Theatre Company with its beloved characters and message of compassion, love and kindness and, of course, Christmas spirit!

Dec. 16: Holiday tours at Hoyt Sherman Place
Each holiday season, the Des Moines Women's Club decorates the historic Hoyt Sherman Place mansion and art gallery. Free tours start at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Dec. 17: Christmas with C.S. Lewis at Hoyt Sherman Place, 7:30 p.m. |
In the early years of his young adult life, C.S. Lewis believed the story of Christ’s birth was nothing more than a feel-good myth. That all changed after a particular encounter with his great friend and fellow author, J.R.R. Tolkien. Although both men loved mythology in general, Tolkien was convinced that the Jesus myth was the one true myth. That was the start of Lewis’ journey from Atheism to Christianity. From that point on, Christmas, for Lewis, took on an entirely different meaning.
Here, we find him at his home near Oxford on Christmas Eve, hosting a group of Americans who are Christmassing in England. They are about to experience an unforgettable assortment of Yuletide recollections which stimulate a whole range of emotions — curiosity, laughter, gladness and even some tears. Above all, they will discover how that encounter with Tolkien forever changed his Christmas celebrations.

Dec. 18: Pentatonix: Allelujah! It's a Christmas Tour at Wells Fargo Arena, 7 p.m. |
Pentatonix is an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Matt Sallee, and Kevin Olusola. Pentatonix is arguably the most famous a cappella group in the music industry, having scored multiple Grammy awards and a cameo in "Pitch Perfect 2."

Christmas on the Hill is a free community celebration aimed at Eastern DM/Polk County families presented by NewLife Church. It's unique because Eastsiders now have an event nearby and no longer have to drive out west for such a function. Activities galore, dinner and prizes are all totally free!
