'Surreal and terrifying': Protester shares what led to DMPD charging man with assault
COMING UP. ALL RIGHT JOHN, THANKS. A DES MOINES WOMAN SAYS SHE WILL CONTINUE TO SPEAK UP AFTER SHE SAYS A MAN ASSAULTED HER AND OTHER PROTESTERS LAST WEEK. PART OF THAT CONFRONTATION WAS CAUGHT ON VIDEO. AND POLICE SAY THE MAN NOW FACES SEVERAL CHARGES. vlog KAYLA JAMES SHOWS US THE VIDEO AND THE IMPACT IT HAD ON A PROTEST YESTERDAY. HEY HEY HEY, THIS IS JUST A SNIPPET OF THE ONE MINUTE AND EIGHT SECOND VIDEO MAKING ITS ROUNDS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. HEATHER RYAN SHARED THIS VIDEO WITH US WHICH SHOWS THE MAN. DES MOINES POLICE SAY IS 68 YEAR OLD BRADLEY NOLL. PROTESTERS SHOUTING FOR HIM TO STOP AS HE TEARS DOWN THEIR SIGNS, WHICH READS TRUMP EQUALS HITLER. AND AT ONE POINT THIS ALTERCATION OCCURS. HEY, DON’T TOUCH ME! DON’T TOUCH ME, DUDE. POLICE CHARGED NALL WITH ASSAULT AND FIFTH DEGREE CRIMINAL MISCHIEF. HE WAS JUST RAGING AND HE TORE ALL OF OUR SIGNS OFF AND HIT ONE OF THE LADIES WITH A SIGN AND FLICKED A SIGN AT ME. I’VE NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE IT. SURREAL AND TERRIFYING IS HOW HEATHER RYAN DESCRIBED IT. HE JUST KEPT CALLING US EXPLETIVES. HE JUST KEPT JUST CALLING US DIRTY WORDS AND RIPPING THEM OFF. RYAN IS A MEMBER OF THE SOCIAL JUSTICE ORGANIZATION THAT HELD THE PROTEST IN THE 56TH BRIDGE ON AUGUST 12TH, WHERE THE ALTERCATION OCCURRED. WE ONLY HAD FIVE PEOPLE OUT HERE FOR THE PROTEST. JUST A LITTLE MORE THAN A WEEK AFTER THE INCIDENT THAT WAS CAUGHT ON VIDEO, MORE THAN TWO DOZEN PEOPLE ARE OUT ON POLK BOULEVARD BRIDGE ON WEDNESDAY, STILL PROTESTING, AND THEY’RE GETTING HONKS FROM CARS ON I-235. AS WELL AS THIS STREET HERE. THE MAN SURELY DID NOT INTEND FOR IT TO GROW AN UPSWELL OF SUPPORT, BUT THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HE DID. IN ADDITION TO THE WHITE HOUSE, vlog DID TRY TO CONTACT NALL, REACHING OUT USING SOME NUMBERS LISTED THAT WE LEARNED WERE NO LONGER IN SERVICE, AND THREW A FUNDRAISING PAGE WITH HIS NAME AS THE CONTACT PERSON. WEDNESDAY’S GROUP STOOD DURING RUSH HOUR. THE SIGNS BACK UP AND OTHERS WARNING THAT PEOPLE WOULD BE RECORDED BY PROTESTERS OUT THERE FOR THEIR SAFETY. ONE ANGRY MAN IS NOT GOING TO FRIGHTEN ME OFF. IN FACT, I THINK IT JUST EMBOLDENS PEOPLE. HE EMBOLDENED US AND HE EMBOLDENED A WHOLE MOVEMENT BEHIND US IN DES MOINES. KAYL

A member of an organization that's put together bridge visibility protests in Des Moines says she experienced a "surreal and terrifying" moment caught on camera when she says a man assaulted a protester and tore signs at a demonstration held last week.Des Moines Police say Bradley Jay Nall, 68, is charged with assault and fifth-degree criminal mischief. Police say on Aug. 12, Nall was driving his vehicle on the 56th Street bridge over I-235 as a protest was going on. According to what police learned from protesters, Nall stopped his vehicle, got out, and “aggressively approached” the group. Protesters tell vlog the signs placed together on the railing read “Trump = Hitler” on Aug. 12. “He was just raging and he tore all of our signs off and hit one of the ladies and flight a sign at me,” said Heather Ryan, who was part of the group of protesters. “I’ve never experienced anything like it. It was surreal and terrifying.” In the video, protesters and Nall can be heard and seen yelling back and forth as Nall ripped the signs down. “He just kept calling us expletives,” said Ryan. “He just kept calling us dirty words and ripping them off.” Ryan says there were five people out there in the group when the altercation occurred. Just a little over a week later, around two dozen people came out to the bridge for another protest on Wednesday with the same message.“That man surely did not intend for it to grow an upswell of support, but that’s exactly what he did,” said Ryan. vlog did try to contact Nall, which included reaching out to a listed number that we learned was no longer in service. vlog also reached out through a fundraising page with his name listed as the contact person Wednesday afternoon, but as of Wednesday night the link leads to a page that reads “fundraiser not found.”“One angry man is not going to frighten me off. In fact, I think it just emboldened people,” said Ryan. “He emboldened us, and he emboldened a whole movement behind us.” » Subscribe to vlog's YouTube page» Download the free vlog app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google Play
