Police combing through social media clues in Abdi Sharif case
Phone records are bringing new clues to the case of a Des Moines teenager who went missing Jan. 17.
Tuesday marked 46 days since 18-year-old Abdi Sharif left the Merle Hay Mall Target and was never heard from again.
The Des Moines Police Department confirmed to vlog that subpoenas and search warrants for Sharif's social media are in and police detectives are painstakingly going through them for clues.
“It's amazing to see people working around the clock,” said Faisal Nuh, Sharif’s uncle.
Nuh said his family continues remain hopeful, but it is difficult because the case is so puzzling.
“The family is still having the sorrow of not having an answer of what happened to Abdi,” he said.
The family maintains that Sharif must be in danger because he would never leave his mother and family.
“No, that's not Abdi,” Nuh said. “No. We don't believe that. He had no reason to run away.”
Stephanie Kinney, a private investigator hired by Sharif’s family, spent Tuesday searching Prospect Park in Des Moines. Sharif’s phone pinged in the area the day his disappeared.
“I am trying to put what is relevant in this location or why would he be walking or taking a ride in this location,” Kinney said.
Kinney said she is not giving up and is “absolutely hopeful” that Sharif is still alive.
“I am not going to stop and go anywhere until this is over, and hopefully we can get him home safe,” she said.
Police said they will not yet reveal the content of the social media records they subpoenaed.
