The National Taxpayer Advocate’s annual report says roughly 70% of taxpayers qualify to use IRS Free File program, but only 2% used it during the 2022 filing season. If you can avoid paying fees to CPA professionals and software companies, there are options.IRS Free File: The IRS partners with the Free File Alliance, which is made up of a bunch of tax preparation companies like TaxSlayer and TaxAct. If you make $73,000 or less, you qualify. Click on this link to take you to the IRS Free File page. The link will do all the math and work for you. There are also fillable forms for anyone, no matter what your income is. Tax preparation websites: Some companies like TurboTax and H&R Block do offer free online filings, but those are often for people who have really simple tax returns. They don’t have an complex credits and deductions that need to be taken. Make sure you check the requirements.
