How Google's new AI technology is being used this hurricane season

How Google's new AI technology is being used this hurricane season
SEASON. BROOKE. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. YASMINE. SO GOOGLE HAS LAUNCHED ITS OWN EXPERIMENTAL CYCLONE PREDICTION PLATFORM CALLED WEATHER LAB. NOAA WILL BE COLLABORATING WITH GOOGLE’S DEEPMIND, AND THIS WILL HELP EVALUATE THE NEW MODELS AND ALSO PROVIDE FEEDBACK TO GOOGLE’S AI WEATHER TEAM. THIS PARTNERSHIP WILL HELP MAXIMIZE THE BENEFITS OF NEW ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WEATHER FORECAST MODELS WITH THE GOAL OF NOAA, WHICH IS TO SAVE LIVES, MITIGATE PROPERTY LOSS, AND ALSO ISSUING THE BEST FORECASTS. THE WEATHER LAB IS AN INTERACTIVE PLATFORM THAT SHOWS GOOGLE’S EXPERIMENTAL CYCLONE PREDICTION MODEL UP TO 15 DAYS IN ADVANCE. THE WEATHER LAB ALSO FEATURES THE EURO’S DETERMINISTIC MODEL AND PHYSICS BASED MODELS FOR COMPARISON, WE HAVE THE HURRICANE CENTER. WE’VE BEGUN TO INGEST THE OUTPUTS OF THE GOOGLE MODEL INTO OUR SYSTEMS, ALONGSIDE ALL OF THE OTHER MODELS AND TOOLS THAT WE USE, AND SO THAT WILL ALLOW US TO BEGIN EXPERIMENTING WITH THIS NEW MODEL. AND EVALUATE IT IN REAL TIME, WHICH IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR ANY NEW TOOL. AND SO WE’LL BE LOOKING AT IT SIDE BY SIDE WITH WITH THE OTHER TOOLS THAT WE USE THIS YEAR, GOOGLE’S WEBSITE ALSO DISCLOSES THAT THE WEATHER CONDITIONS IN CYCLONE TRACKS ARE FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY, AND THAT THEY ARE NOT THE OFFICIAL WEATHER FORECAST. SO IF YOU WANT TO SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE TROPICS, OF COURSE YOU WANT TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE NATIONA

This hurricane season, NOAA and Google are teaming up for a method to track storms that uses artificial intelligence. Google has launched its own experimental cyclone prediction platform called Weatherlab. NOAA will be collaborating with Google's DeepMind and will evaluate the new models and provide feedback to Google's AI weather team. This partnership aims to maximize the benefits of new artificial intelligence weather forecast models. NOAA's goal with the technology is to save lives, mitigate property loss and issue the best forecasts. The Weatherlab is an interactive platform that shows Google's experimental cyclone prediction model up to 15 days in advance. Google's Weatherlab also features the Euro’s deterministic model and physics-based models for comparison. Wallace Hogsett, the Science and Operations Officer for the National Hurricane Center said, "We've began to ingest the outputs of the Google models into our systems alongside the other models and tools that we use. This will allow us to begin experimenting with this new model and evaluate it in real time which is really important new tool. So we'll be looking at it side by side with the other tools that we use this year." The website also discloses that weather conditions and cyclone tracks are for informational purposes only and that they are not the official weather forecasts.
