‘I'd be lying if I said the journey had been an easy one': Alex Trebek reflects on cancer diagnosis 1 year later
‘Jeopardy!’ host Alex Trebek announced Wednesday he had reached the one year survival mark since he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
“The one-year survival rate for stage 4 pancreatic cancer patients is 18%,” Trebek said in the video announcement. “I'm very happy to report I have just reached that marker.”
The beloved game show host revealed last March that he had been diagnosed with the disease. The 5-year survival rate for those with Trebek's kind of cancer is just 9%, according to the American Cancer Society.
The 79-year-old said the last year hasn’t always been easy.
“Now I'd be lying if I said the journey had been an easy one,” he said. “There were some good days but a lot of not-so-good days. I joked with friends that the cancer won't kill me; the chemo treatments will.”
Trebek said that the support from his family and his fans has pushed him through the dark days. Trebek’s oncologist is predicting they’ll be celebrating his second-year survival anniversary.
