Immigration agents found 76 people working illegally at Omaha plant, DOJ confirms
A U.S. attorney for the Department of Justice confirmed Homeland Security Investigations found "approximately 76 people" working illegally at an Omaha plant during an enforcement operation, vlog sister station KETV reports.
A federal search warrant was executed at Glenn Valley Foods near 67th and J streets on Tuesday as part of the "Take Back America Task Force." It involved U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, HSI and other federal law enforcement agencies. They were looking for workers not authorized to work in the United States.
In a news release, Attorney Lesley Woods said HSI performed an audit of employee I-9 forms at the plant to verify identity documents. That audit reportedly revealed a large number of suspected fraudulent documents and showed that multiple identities of U.S. citizens were being fraudulently used by workers at the plant.
Victims of identity theft had reported complaints to HSI before the warrant was executed, according to the news release.
Authorities said they found that approximately 76 workers at the plant were using Social Security numbers that were not their own. Several criminal complaints were also referred to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Nebraska. Criminal complaints included allegations of stolen identities, assaults on federal officers and damage to federal property, illegal reentry and other criminal concerns.
The U.S. attorney's office said charges have not yet been determined, adding the investigation is ongoing.
