Florida woman surprised to see 'inflation fee' on restaurant bill
VISIT AND DETAILS ON WESH 2 NEWS AT 5:00. THE FEDERAL RESERVE SAYS INFLATION REACHED A NEW, 40-YEAR HIGH OF 9.1% IN JUNE. MICHELLE: AS BUSINESSES STRUGGLE TO DEAL WITH THE RISING COSTS, ONE NATIONAL RESTAURANT CHAIN IS ADDING AN INFLATION FEE TO THE BILL. JIM: MICHELLE MEREDITH REPORTS, THE FEE IS DRAWING RESPONSES FROM DINERS AND OTHER RESTAURANTS. MICHELLE: THE PRICE OF A MEAL AT MACARONI GRILL JUST GOT MORE EXPENSIVE. THE NATIONAL RESTAURANT CHAIN IS NOW CHARGING A $2 TEMPORARY INFLATION FEE. THE FEE IS TACKED ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR BILL. >> WERE YOU UPSET? >> NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT. THERE’S A SIGN ON THE FRONT DOOR THAT SAYS WITH THE SUPPLY CHAIN SHORTAGE AND INCREASED INFLATION, THAT IT’S IMPACTING COSTS OF DOING BUSINESS. THE RESTAURANT’S WEBSITE GOES ON TO SAY IN PART IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASY TO SIMPLY RAISE OR MENU PRICES AS MANY RESTAURANTS HAVE DONE BUT CONSIDERS THE FEE A TEMPORARY SOLUTION. [KNOCKING] BUT SOME FAMILY OWNED RESTAURANTS WE TALKED TO ARE DOWNRIGHT APPALLED. JULIE CASEY IS THE OWNER AND CHEF OF THE OUTPOST IN MAITLAND. >> PERSONALLY, I THINK IT IS BRAND SUICIDE. CONSUMERS ARE SUFFERING, TOO. IN ESSENCE, IT FEELS LIKE A PUNISHMENT TO THE CONSUMER FOR COMING INTO MACARONI GRILL. MICHELLE: PUNISHMENT? OR THE PRICE OF DOING BUSINESS? The price of a meal at one national restaurant chain just got more expensive. Macaroni Grill is now charging a $2 "temporary inflation fee." The fee is tacked on the bottom of customers' bills. Customer Alison Burke said she was surprised but "completely understands" the need for the restaurant to do that. Loyal Macaroni Grill customers sister station WESH talked to say they don't mind. "We had the most wonderful service. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. Great meal. Good time out with friends. Definitely worth it," Burke said. Macaroni Grill does warn customers with a sign on the door that the supply chain shortage and inflation are impacting their cost of doing business. The restaurant’s website goes on to say that it would have been easy to raise menu prices, as many restaurants have done, but considers the fee a temporary solution.However, some family-owned restaurants were appalled. Julie Casey is the owner and chef of the Outpost in Maitland. "Personally, I think it's branding suicide," she said. Casey said she frequently changes their menu to adjust to the economy, just like her customers. "We're all suffering. Macaroni Grill is not the only one suffering. Consumers are suffering too. So in essence it feels like a punishment to the consumer for coming into Macaroni Grill," Casey said.
