Commitment 2022: Ashley Hinson candidate profile
In Iowa's 2nd Congressional District, Republican incumbent Ashley Hinson will face off against Democrat Liz Mathis in the November general election.
Hinson is finishing her first term in Congress representing District 1 and hoping to represent the newly redrawn District 2 for another term.
vlog's Amanda Rooker talked with Ashley Hinson about why she's running for reelection.
Candidate profile:
Republican Ashley Hinson's spent one term in Congress representing Iowa's 1st Congressional District. She flipped that seat from blue to red in 2020, defeating the one-term representative Abby Finkenauer.
Now Hinson's taking on a new opponent, Democrat Liz Mathis, and a newly redrawn Congressional District. She is hoping District 2 voters will send her back for a second term in Congress.
"I will provide the check on the Biden-Pelosi agenda, restore our economy, fight for a nation that's safe, a future built on freedom and a government that's accountable to the people. I will deliver on that promise. My opponent won't," Hinson said.
Hinson says she is able to represent constituents that disagree with her politically.
“There will be issues that we of course, passionately disagree on. But I think I’ve done a great job representing a lot of different viewpoints because I go everywhere all the time and go connect with Iowans where they are,” Hinson said.
Hinson spoke to vlog about her work on the appropriations committee in Congress.
“I’m the only Iowan on the appropriations committee, which is very important, because ultimately, when it comes to government spending, and respecting taxpayer dollars, which is my number one job, and My goal is to advocate for taxpayers. I’ve been able to deliver reinvestment back in the district in a very targeted way.”
Pointing to action she's taken on issues like energy independence and the supply chain, Hinson encourages voters to look at her Congressional Record.
But she also says there's more work to be done on Capitol Hill.
“We’ve reinvested essential resources back in Iowa to support emergency personnel and management. We’ve supported targeted investments in infrastructure, help with child care, and again, I’ve worked on so many of these issues that are a direct result of the feedback I’ve gotten from Iowans out in the District, So I’d like the opportunity to continue that work for Iowans,” Hinson said.
