Senior Henry Lounsbury leads the team with 254 yards passing, with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Senior Tate Doggett has a team-high 238 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 24 carries, and is tied for the longest touchdown run in 2A so far this season with an 80-yarder.The 3A Huskies opened the season with a 45-20 loss against ADM (Adel) before beating Creston, 28-27, last week. Junior Carson Cook leads the team with 285 yards passing, with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Senior Ben Porter has 302 yards rushing — third in 3A — and two touchdowns on 43 carries, and senior Jace Bellamy has 3 touchdowns on just seven carries. It'll be a warm one Friday night. We'll see highs in the low-90s in central Iowa this afternoon and the heat will linger well into the evening, with temps in the high-80s around 7 p.m. kickoff time.

Game of the week

Our Week 3 game of the week is Winterset at Van Meter. vlog's Jeff Dubrof will be there for kickoff at 7 p.m.

The Class 2A Bulldogs are 1-1 after dropping their season opener against Des Moines Christian, 29-21, and beating Treynor last week, 21-13. Senior Henry Lounsbury leads the team with 254 yards passing, with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Senior Tate Doggett has a team-high 238 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 24 carries, and is tied for the longest touchdown run in 2A so far this season with an 80-yarder.

The 3A Huskies opened the season with a 45-20 loss against ADM (Adel) before beating Creston, 28-27, last week. Junior Carson Cook leads the team with 285 yards passing, with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Senior Ben Porter has 302 yards rushing — third in 3A — and two touchdowns on 43 carries, and senior Jace Bellamy has 3 touchdowns on just seven carries. Bellamy is also second in 3A in tackles through two games, with 24.5.

The teams haven't met since 2022 when Van Meter won, 42-17.

Wild Card game

This week's Wild Card game is an 8-player matchup — Twin Cedars at Southeast Warren. vlog's Shannon Ehrhardt will be in Lacona for kickoff at 7 p.m.

The host Warhawks are 2-0, with wins over Murray (68-12) and Baxter (62-34). Twin Cedars is 1-1 after opening with a loss to Melcher-Dallas (52-40) then beating Mormon Trail (20-8).

Southeast Warren senior Jamison Ewing is second in the 8-player class with 461 yards rushing and has a team-high 7 touchdowns on the ground. He also leads the Warhawks with 225 yards passing and three touchdowns. Junior Cael Dop leads the team with 13.5 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks.

Senior Holden Roberts leads Twin Cedars with 407 yards passing with 7 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He also has a team-high 141 yards on 15 carries. Two receivers are over 100 yards for the Sabers — juniors Brandon Puyer (155 yards, 9 catches, 4 touchdowns) and Brock Micetich (119 yards, 8 catches, 1 touchdown).

Iowa high school football coach quits in hopes of forcing school to cancel season

A high school football coach in eastern Iowa has resigned, hoping it would force the school to cancel the football season. Coach Cory Quail posted to Facebook Wednesday night to confirm he had resigned as head coach of the Highland football coach saying he did so for player safety.

Ankeny senior Daniel Larmie leads Class 5A with 470 rushing yards through two games.

On defense in 4A, Fort Dodge senior Dreshaun Ross is dominating on defense. The Oklahoma State wrestling commit leads the class with 4 sacks and 8 tackles for loss. He also has 110 yards rushing for the 2-0 Dodgers with one touchdown.
