A state lawmaker from West Des Moines is in hospice care, according to family members who released a statement Thursday morning. “Senator Claire Celsi, our beloved wife, sister, mom, and grandma, has entered hospice care," her family said. "Our family asks that you please respect our privacy during this difficult time. Thank you.”Celsi, a Democrat, has served in the Iowa Senate since 2019. She was initially elected to serve the state's 21st District, but after the 2023 district realignment, she now serves the 16th District, which covers parts of Clive, West Des Moines and Windsor Heights.Celsi, 59, took a medical leave from the state Senate while awaiting surgery earlier this year, but she returned later in the legislative session and was present at the Statehouse when the session concluded.Before serving in the senate, Celsi was a founding member of the West Des Moines Democrats.
