THEY’RE RULING ESSENTIALLY SAYS THE RIGHT TO AN ABORTION IS NOT GUARANTEED, BUT THEY DID NOT CLARIFY WHATHE T NEW STANDARD SHOULD BE SPEAKING WITH PRO-CHOICE STATE LEGISLATORS TODAY. THEY SAY THIS WILL BE A HUGE TALKING POINT FOR THEM THIS ELECTION CYCLE WHILE PRO-LIFE ADVOCATES BELIEVE THE COURTS MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE. WE KNOW THAT WE ARE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THIS ISSUE AND WE’RE GOING TO BE REMINDING VOTERS OF THAT ALL FALL, BUT THE STAKES ARE SO HIGH BECAUSE OF WHAT COULD BE COMING NOW WITH THIS DECISION AND THERE IS NO CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO ABORTION INOW IA’S CONSTITUTION. AND THE US SUPREME COURT IS EXPECTED TO MAKE A SIMILAR DECISION WHICH COULD FURTHER RESTRICT ABORTION RIGHTS A

The court made it easier for lawmakers to limit or outlaw abortion in the state, reversing a decision by the court four years ago that guaranteed the right to abortion under the Iowa Constitution. That decision involves a law requiring women to wait 24 hours before getting an abortion. The 2020 waiting period law was overturned due to an Iowa Supreme Court ruling in 2018.The court concluded Friday that the 2018 decision was wrongly decided and should be overturned. A judge struck down the law in June 2021, citing the 2018 Iowa Supreme Court decision that declared abortion a fundamental right under the state constitution. The court reversed the judge's decision and sent the case back to district court.Gov. Reynolds released the following statement in response to the Iowa Supreme Court’s ruling:“Today’s ruling is a significant victory in our fight to protect the unborn. The Iowa Supreme Court reversed its earlier 2018 decision, which made Iowa the most abortion-friendly state in the country. Every life is sacred and should be protected, and as long as I’m governor that is exactly what I will do.”The Iowa Democratic Party released the following statement: “The majority of Iowans and the majority of Americans believe that abortion should be legal and not subject to the personal whims of a fringe minority. This decision introduces new barriers to accessing care and leaves Iowans exposed to even more attacks on our reproductive freedoms. We are one step closer to a future where Iowa Republicans could have free rein to outlaw abortion and restrict reproductive health care. I know that many of us feel afraid right now, but we have the power to elect Iowa Democrats this fall who will write the protections of Roe into law at both the federal and state level.
