Flood warning issued for Polk, Dallas counties; two Des Moines trails forced to close
RIGHT NOW. SEVERAL ROADS IN DES MOINES CLOSED THIS MORNING AFTER HEAVY RAIN CREATED FLASH FLOODING. THIS IS WHAT EAST EUCLID LOOKED LIKE AROUND 730, WITH SEVERAL INCHES OF STANDING WATER UNDER THE OVERPASS NEAR I-235. YOU CAN SEE AT LEAST A COUPLE OF CARS STUCK THERE IN THE WATER. ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA TO TURN AROUND. DON’T DROWN. WE ARE EXPECTING MODERATE FLOODING ACROSS THE DES MOINES AREA TODAY AS THE RIVERS RISE AFTER THE RAINFALL. vlog’S TODD MAGEL IS ALONG THE BIKE TRAIL AT COLBY PARK IN WINDSOR HEIGHTS, AND TODD, YOU CAN SEE RIGHT BEHIND YOU THERE THAT WATER CREEPING IN WHEREVER YOU LOOK. YEAH. JODI. IT’S BEEN A WHILE SINCE WE’VE COVERED FLOODING HERE IN CENTRAL IOWA. WE GOT PLENTY OF IT THIS MORNING. TAKE A LOOK BEHIND ME. WE’RE JUST NEXT TO A I-235 IN WINDSOR HEIGHTS. COLBY PARK IS RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO US. AND THIS IS WALNUT CREEK. YOU CAN LOOK AT. IT IS VERY HIGH RIGHT NOW, AND IT IS RUNNING REALLY FAST THANKS TO ALL THAT RAIN WE HAD EARLY THIS MORNING. IN FACT, IT’S NOT JUST THE OH, WE’RE GOING TO HAVE TO STEP OUT OF THE WAY HERE. SORRY. WE GOT CREWS COMING THROUGH FROM THE CITY OF WINDSOR HEIGHTS. SO THEY ARE ABOUT TO CLOSE THIS TRAIL THAT GOES ALONG COLBY PARK. AND SO CREWS HAVE BEEN OUT HERE SURVEYING THE DAMAGE. EARLIER TODAY. AND THIS IS ONE OF MANY TRAILS THAT WILL BE SHUTTING DOWN IF WE WANT TO LOOK JUST CLOSER, YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THE WATER THAT’S BUBBLING UP THROUGH THE GROUND. WE’RE TOLD FROM THE CITY MANAGER, WINDSOR HEIGHTS, THAT THIS IS WATER THAT’S COMING DOWN FROM THE FREEWAY. IT’S TRYING TO GET INTO THE CREEK, BUT THERE’S SO MUCH WATER IN THE CREEK THAT WATER CAN’T GO ANYWHERE, AND IT’S BUBBLING UP THROUGH THE GROUND. SO THIS IS JUST ONE AREA OF WALNUT CREEK AND WINDSOR HEIGHTS. IT’S ALSO HIGH OUT IN CLIVE AND IN URBANDALE, WHERE THIS CREEK GOES EVENTUALLY AS IT GOES NORTH AND WEST OF US. SO KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE TRAILS MAY BE CLOSED. IF YOU’RE WALKING, JOGGING, WALKING YOUR DOG, BIKING, THAT COULD BE A PROBLEM THERE. ALSO, DES MOINES TRAILS CLOSED, AND WE’LL HEAR MORE ABOUT THAT COMING UP TONIGHT AT FOUR, FIVE AND SIX. AND WE’RE LIVE IN WINDSOR HEIGHTS. TODD MAGEL, vlog EIGHT NEWS, IOWA’S NEWS LEADER. YES. SPEAKING OF THOSE DES MOINES TRAILS CLOSING, FLOODING HAS FORCED TWO OF THEM TO CLOSE IN THE CITY. THAT INCLUDES WALNUT CREEK TRAIL FROM CENTER STREET TO THE GRAND AVENUE BRIDGE AND THE BILL RILEY TRAIL FROM THE WALNUT CREEK CONNECTOR TO WATER WORKS. PARK. CITY STAFF IS CLOSELY KEEPING AN EYE ON THE RIVER LEVELS, AND MORE CLOSURES ARE EXPECTED AS THE RIVER LEVELS RISE THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND. TRAIL USERS CAN TEXT DSM TRAILS TO 8
