Iowa weather: Looking ahead at frigid temperatures and another chance at heavy snow
STOPS FALLING. THEY SAY IT USUALLY TAKES ABOUT 14 HOURS TO CLEAR ALL THE ROADS. SO TAKE A LOOK AT THIS. THIS OKAY. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING. AT HERE. YEAH, YEAH. YOU SAW LIGHTNING, RIGHT? THIS HAPPENS AS THE SNOWSTORM MOVED ACROSS OUR STATE. vlog VIEWER JOSH PADGETT SENT US THIS VIDEO OF THUNDER SNOW. HE CAPTURED IT ON CAMERA ABOUT THREE MILES WEST OF ADEL IN DALLAS COUNTY. I MEAN, WE ARE SEEING ALL KINDS OF WEATHER, BIG SNOWSTORM EARLIER THIS WEEK, A SNOW SQUALL, THUNDER, SNOW. GOODNESS GRACIOUS. I MEAN, LISTEN. ALL RIGHT, JASON, LET’S HOPE THAT NOTHING ELSE IS, YOU KNOW. OH, GOSH. YEAH. OH, THERE’S PLENTY THAT’S LURKING. I MEAN, YOU GOT TO THINK OF IT IN PERSPECTIVE THOUGH. LIKE WE DIDN’T REALLY HAVE WINTER UNTIL JANUARY. SO NOW IT’S GOING TO MAKE UP FOR LOST TIME. THERE YOU GO. YEAH. AND NOW IT’S JUST LIKE GOING OVERBOARD. YEAH, I THINK SO. RIGHT. BUT IF IT KEEPS DELIVERING THESE WONDERFUL SNOWMEN LIKE TINLEY BUILT. WELL, I SAY BRING ON EVEN MORE SNOW. I DON’T KNOW HOW YOU GOT THAT HEAD ON THAT SNOWMAN. TINLEY, BUT THE EFFORT YOU PUT IN IS AMAZING. AND THAT MIGHT BE THE BEST SNOWMAN I’VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. SO THANK YOU FOR SHARING THAT PICTURE WITH ME. YOU CAN SEE MORE SNOW FLYING OUT THERE THROUGH THE METRO UPWARDS TOWARDS ALTOONA, AND WE GO OFF TO THE SOUTH. WE’RE DRYING OUT ON THE BACK SIDE OF THIS SYSTEM. STILL SNOW THOUGH, ALL THE WAY UP EAST TO KOSSUTH COUNTY TOWARDS MASON CITY AND MORE WORKING. ITS WAY FROM DISART DOWN THROUGH DELTON, THROUGH BELLE PLAINE. EXCUSE ME, THIS IS THAT LINE THAT WAS A THAT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT SNOW SQUALL WARNING. IT HAS WEAKENED, THANKFULLY, BUT STILL. PLAN ON PICKING UP A LITTLE BIT OF SNOW VISIBILITY HAS DROPPED AGAIN IN THE METRO. WE’RE DOWN TO A MILE, MILE AND A HALF FOR AMES, TWO MILES FOR GRINNELL. GIVE YOURSELF A LITTLE BIT OF EXTRA TIME IF YOU’RE HITTING THE ROADS TONIGHT. THOSE ROADS ARE VERY SLICK OUT THERE, 100% COVERED THROUGHOUT THE METRO. THIS FIRST BATCH OF SNOW TAKES. A HIKE N OUT OF HERE TOMORROW MORNING. NOT BAD. IT WILL BE A LITTLE BIT BREEZY, BUT WE MIGHT EVEN SNEAK IN SOME SUNSHINE. CALL IT THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM THOUGH, BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE THAT WAVE OF SNOW WORKING ITS WAY IN FROM THE SOUTH. 7 A.M. WE ARE POSITIVELY IN THE THICK OF IT. THIS LIGHTER, DRIER SNOW IS GOING TO BLOW AROUND A LOT, AND YOU CAN. THANK THE STRONG WINDS FOR THAT. WE COULD SEE GUSTS OF 40 TO 45MPH. SO EVEN AFTER THE SNOW GETS OUT OF HERE, THAT WIND IS STILL GOING TO BE BLOWING THAT SNOW RIGHT BACK ON THE ROADS, WHICH WILL LEAD TO EVEN MORE SLICK CONDITIONS. AS FAR AS HOW MUCH SNOW WE HAVE LEFT FROM THIS SYSTEM, SOME AREAS TO THE EAST COULD STILL PICK UP A LITTLE BIT, ESPECIALLY IN THAT LINE THAT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT SQUALL WARNING. AND THOSE SNOWFALL RATES MAY STILL BE UP, BUT YOU CAN SEE 100% COVERED ROADS ALONG I-80 EAST AND WEST. WE ARE SEEING SOME RECOVERY HERE IN THE METRO WITH JUST PARTIALLY COVERED ROADS. BUT TAKE YOUR TIME IF YOU’RE HEADED OUT AND THEN WELL, THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY WE HAVE GOT ANOTHER BEAST OF A SYSTEM WORKING ITS WAY IN. COULD SEE UP TO TEN INCHES IN SPOTS. WOULDN’T BE SURPRISED TO SEE MORE THAN THAT. METRO COMING IN AT AROUND 6 TO 8IN, BUT WE’LL FINE TUNE TOTALS AS WE GET CLOSER. BEHIND THAT SYSTEM THOUGH. IT’S GOING TO BE C

After a snowy start to the week, when some spots across the state saw up to a foot, cooler temperatures have settled in. Interactive Radar | Weather AlertsThere's some snow in the air Wednesday night, but accumulations will most likely be a dusting around central Iowa. Better chance for accumulations around a half-inch to and inch will be north of Interstate 80. And then there's a chance for another round of heavy snow, which could create blizzard conditions Thursday into Friday. The National Weather Service has a winter storm warning in effect from noon Thursday to 6 p.m. Friday for a dozen western Iowa counties that could see accumulations of 5 to 10 inches of snow with winds gusting up to 45 mph. A winter storm watch is in effect for the same period for much of the rest of the state, according to the weather service. This round of snow will be different than what came Monday and Tuesday because it will be much colder. We could be looking at blizzard conditions with a more light and fluffy snow rather than the wet heavy snow.Travel will be discouraged across the state with the worst impact being along Interstate 80 and to the south.CLOSINGS: See closings and delays for metro schools and businesses After the heavy snow, the temperatures will drop substantially. Lows will dip below zero for the first time this year as arctic air is pushing over the Midwest.
