Iowa weather: Weekend arctic blast will bring some snow and ice chances
TONIGHT THOUGH, IT’S FOOTBALL AGAIN. OUTSIDE. YEAH. AND IT’S NOT GONNA BE TOO BAD YOU KNOW OF COURSE A LITTLE COOL WHEN YOU GET TO THE EVENING AND OVERNIGHT HOURS. BUT THE BIG SHOW STARTS THIS WEEKEND. THAT’S WHY WE’RE WEATHER IMPACT ON SATURDAY. RAIN, SNOW MIX. A CHANCE. NOT FOR EVERYBODY AND FOR MOST OF THE STATE. ANY TYPE OF SNOW MELTING AS IT DOES OR EVEN BEFORE IT HITS THE GROUND. BUT THERE WILL BE SOME MINOR ACCUMULATIONS TO TRACK AND EVEN A CHANCE FOR ICE. AS WE TALK ABOUT SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING, BREAKING DOWN THE TIMING. WHAT’S HAPPENING WHEN IT’S STARTING SATURDAY MORNING OFF TO THE WEST BY AROUND 5:00 6:00, EVEN GOING TO AROUND EIGHT. YOU’RE GOING TO START TO SEE MORE OF A RAIN SNOW MIX. NOW, HOUR BY HOUR WANTS TO LEAN A LITTLE BIT MORE FOR THE SNOW. I’M NOT EXPECTING IT TO BE A FULL ON SNOW EVENT BECAUSE NOTICE THESE TEMPERATURES MID TO UPPER 30S AND A LITTLE BIT ABOVE THE SURFACE AS WELL, GOING TO BE ABOVE FREEZING. SO AS THAT SNOW FALLS IT’S GOING TO HIT THAT WARM LAYER. IT’S GOING TO MELT. SO WE’RE GOING TO SEE A LOT MORE OF THAT RAIN SNOW MIX. AND ESPECIALLY AS IT HITS THE WARMER GROUND. NOW AS WE GO DEEPER INTO SATURDAY MORNING INTO SATURDAY AFTERNOON. NOW STILL A CHANCE OF RAIN SNOW MIX FARTHER NORTH. YOU’RE STARTING TO GET MORE OF THOSE MID TO LOWER 30S POSSIBLE. SO NOW YOU’RE STARTING TO COOL THINGS DOWN JUST A BIT MORE. CAN EXPECT THAT TO START TO HIT THE GROUND. STILL A LOT OF MELTING. THE ONLY ACCUMULATIONS REALLY GOING TO BE VERY LOW, BUT WE COULD SEE SOME FARTHER NORTH AND NORTHWEST. AND AS WE GO DEEPER INTO THE EVENING, STILL HOLDING ON TO THAT MIX AS WE GET INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS, IT DOES TAPER OFF. MAYBE SOME STRAGGLERS, SOME LIGHT RAIN, SOME LIGHT SNOW. EVEN AS WE START DROPPING THOSE TEMPERATURES. BUT WATCH THIS SUNDAY, EARLY MORNING, WE’RE ALREADY GETTING THE 20 BY 2 A.M. OVER, ESPECIALLY THE NORTHERN NORTHWESTERN PORTION OF THE STATE. AND THAT’S GOING TO LEAD TO OUR FIRST HARD FREEZE ACROSS THE ENTIRE STATE. THESE ARE THE SUNDAY MORNING LOWS. SO WE ARE GOING TO DIP. AND THAT WILL LEAD TO A CHANCE FOR SOME ICE FORMING FOR ANY TYPE OF TRAVEL YOU HAVE EARLY SUNDAY. AS WE GET INTO THE SNOW ACCUMULATIONS, OBVIOUSLY NOT VERY MUCH. LIKE I SAID, VERY MINOR ACCUMULATIONS NORTH AND NORTHWEST. A CHANCE FOR MAINLY A BELOW. HALF AN INCH POSSIBLE AS FAR AS THE RAIN. THAT’S GOING TO BE A LITTLE BIT MORE ON THE IMPRESSIVE SIDE, ESPECIALLY FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. QUARTERS. AROUND HALF AN INCH OF RAIN IS GOING TO BE EXPECTED AS WE LOOK AT A PRETTY COLD SOAKER THROUGHOUT SATURDAY, AND THEN THE WIND, THE COLD MOVES IN SATURDAY NIGHT. WE ALREADY TALKED ABOUT IT MID 20S TO LOW 20S, BUT IT’S GOING TO FEEL LIKE THE TEENS EVEN LOW DOUBLE DIGITS AS WE WAKE UP ON SUNDAY. AND THEN ALL DAY SUNDAY THE WARMEST IT’S GOING TO FEEL OUTSIDE WILL BE THE MID 20S EIGHT DAY FORECAST. NOW ON THE SCREEN. IT’S A WINTER WEEKEND AHEAD. AND THEN AS WE GET INTO MONDAY, STILL AN OVERALL COLD DAY. ANOTHER HARD FREEZE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY AND THEN WE’LL HAVE MORE SUNSHINE. BUT WE DON’T GET BACK ABOVE AVERAGE UNTIL TUESDAY. VETERAN’S DAY, MID 50S AND ALL OF NEXT WEEK WILL BE IN THE 5
