Joni Ernst holds onto Senate seat for another term
(R) Sen. Joni Ernst is keeping her seat in the U.S. Senate for another term earning 51.91% of the vote.
Her opponent, Democratic candidate Theresa Greenfield had 45.06% of the vote with 93.68% of precincts reporting.
Ernst, a Red Oak native, was first elected into the Senate in 2015. She has served on the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services, Committee on Environment and Public Works, Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, Committee on Small Business and Administration and Committee on the Judiciary.
As a member of the Judiciary Committee, Ernst vetted Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett, and supported her nomination.
Her recent key votes include voting for a ban on abortions after 20 weeks which did not pass, voted against convicting President Donald Trump of contempt due to his impeachment and voted in favor of the CARES Act which passed unanimously.
When asked what would be her top priority in her next term, Ernst told vlog, "I’m a champion for farmers, veterans and working families and a tireless advocate for abuse survivors. I’ve fought successfully to protect and promote ethanol, expand trade for Iowa products and deliver critical COVID assistance to farmers and families. I wrote the law to expand mental health services for fellow veterans. I’ve helped implement sweeping reforms to improve care for military sexual assault survivors, protect them from retaliation and hold perpetrators accountable. As a mom, I’m working so parents have access to affordable child care. Additionally, I’m fighting to lower prescription drug costs by taking on big pharmaceutical company greed and forcing a cap on out-of-pocket expenses."
Ernst and Greenfield's 2020 Senate campaigns were the second-most expensive Senate race in United States history.
