A very Iowa Christmas: Sarah Pratt sculpts nativity scene out of butter in 2010
Especially working in this building. You, it's like there's windows all the way around and you see downtown Des Moines from every vantage point. So I'm sitting, I'm in the cooler, bundled up in December. Um, and just thinking about the event of all the things. Sculptor Sarah Pratt has had her hands on. I have sculpted uh Superman and Sean Johnson green eggs and Ham never Marian Joseph. This is her most reflective work of art yet. I wanted to elicit the feeling of this family that's desperate and lost. And um you know, what are we going to do? We're having this baby. We, we're not at home. This isn't, wasn't our plan. This wasn't Moby. Um had thought we would be doing through every box of butter, every push of her frozen finger. It's 42 degrees. Pratt may be creating the original homeless family, but she's thinking of the ones dealing with it today. But I think I've grown spiritually myself just through the experience and um it's really amazing how it almost forms itself as you're working and you're seeing it come to life at this weekend's fundraiser. Her Butter Mary Joseph and Jesus will be the center of *** Nativity Collection. 300 strong food has always helped the homeless and hungry, but never quite like this. I want it to elicit emotion. I want, I want them to feel something when they look at it.
