Controllers handling flights around Newark Liberty International Airport experience another outage

Controllers handling flights around Newark Liberty International Airport experience another outage
This is bureaucracy at its worst. Hundreds of delays and cancellations are filling the notification boards at Newark Liberty International Airport for an unparalleled 8th day. I'm concerned every time I fly. These problems have been going on not just for years but for decades. United CEO Scott Kirby echoes the concerns of the Transportation Department's former Inspector General Mary Shivo, recently calling Newark's air traffic. Control facility chronically understaffed for years compounded by last week's walkout that he said saw 20% of the airport's controllers leave. United now says it's canceling 35 flights out of Newark every day, saying in *** statement that Newark Airport cannot handle the number of planes scheduled to operate there in the weeks and months ahead. He's trying to say we can't continue to rely on the FAA, which is *** huge thing to say. *** former Federal Aviation Administration safety inspector agrees air traffic controllers are at *** breaking point. They've been working 60 hour weeks for years and years. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy cites *** runway construction closure and outdated equipment failures as part of Newark's current operational struggles, but adds big changes are coming. We're going to lay fiber, we're going to get new radar, there are new radios, new ground sensors. The equipment that is facing the controllers to all the back end equipment. We have 500 plus airports in the United States. They have different equipment, so it's not the same system wherever you go. Secretary Duffy has to do this, but it will take years, time that many anxious air travelers don't have. Have *** lot of travel coming up, so hopefully they can resolve this quickly. I'm Laura Aguirre reporting.

Air traffic controllers handling flights approaching and departing Newark Liberty International Airport experienced another outage early Friday morning. The blackout included losing radar for about 90 seconds at Newark Terminal Radar Approach Control at 3:55 a.m. local time, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.“There was a telecommunications outage that impacted communications and radar display at Philadelphia TRACON Area C, which guides aircraft in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport airspace,” the statement noted. There are 246 delays and 66 cancellations reported at Newark, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware, as of 11:30 a.m. Friday.Staffing issues for Newark Terminal Radar Approach Control are noted in the publicly available FAA operations plan for nearly the entire day, and the flow of aircraft is being managed due to “staffing constraints.”Bad weather, including low clouds, and runway construction are also delaying Newark flights Friday. The outage is the latest in a series of troubling technical problems that have impacted the air traffic control system in the United States. On April 28, an outage of radar and communications at the same facility left controllers unable to talk to planes or see where they were located. As CNN previously reported, at least five controllers took 45 days of trauma leave after that incident, leading to a staffing shortage that canceled and delayed more than a thousand flights. On Thursday, the Department of Transportation announced an overhaul of the nation’s air traffic control system.“What we’re seeing through the system is, you know, hundreds of times a week, blips in connectivity, which is a sign that you’re seeing issues with your telecom,” Secretary Sean Duffy told CNN after the announcement.
