Oat milk, coffee and protein shakes recalled due to microbial contamination

Lyons Magnus is voluntarily recalling 53 products from Oatly, Stumptown, Intelligentsia and more.

Before you enjoy another cold brew with oat milk, you may want to double-check the milk and coffee labels. The parent company of many popular oat milk, protein shakes and on-the-go coffee drink brands, Lyons Magnus, announced on Thursday that it is voluntarily recalling 53 nutritional beverages and other beverage products. The recall is due to the potential for microbial contamination from Cronobacter sakazakii, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Lyons Magnus is recalling products that were sold nationally in individual containers and larger, multi-carton cases. Contaminated products fall under a variety of brand names and products including the popular Oatly oat-milk barista edition, Aloha plant-based protein in chocolate sea salt, coconut, vanilla and iced coffee, Stumptown cold brew coffee drinks, and Intelligentsia cold coffee and oat latte products. The complete list of brands that have been impacted by the recall can be found on the FDA’s website, but include various products from Oatly, Premier Protein, MRE, Stumptom, Imperial, Lyons Ready Care, Lyons Barista Style, Pirq, Glucerna Original (sold at Costco, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and Sam’s Club), Aloha, Intelligentsia and Kate Farms. You can check the FDA’s complete list of recalled products to determine if what you have on hand matches the lot code and best by date on contaminated cartons. If you are concerned you may have a contaminated product, the FDA recommends returning the product or throwing the item away. Do not consume the product. The FDA suggests contacting the Lyons Recall Support center with additional questions at 1-800-627-0557 or on their website. As of today, no illnesses or complaints have been reported related to these products. This news comes months after Abbott Nutrition recalled several powdered infant formulas due to contamination concerns. The nutrition giant voluntarily recalled products over potential salmonella and Cronobacter sakazakii (the same bacteria Lyons Magnus is concerned about) contamination. According to the FDA, the Lyons Magnus recall does not include products intended for infants and is a separate case from that of Abbott Nutrition. What is Cronobacter sakazakii?Cronobacter sakazakii is a group of bacteria that exist in the environment, especially in dry conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Infection from this bacteria is diagnosed by laboratory culture. Infection from Cronobacter sakazakii is rare, but the FDA warns that symptoms may include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infection. Those who are immunocompromised or more vulnerable to illness (such as infants or the elderly) may be more susceptible to infection. If you are at all concerned about potential infection or have knowingly consumed the impacted products, contact your healthcare provider and dispose of the recalled product.
