IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE SOME ATHLETES ARE TRAINING FOR THE WINTER OLYMPICS RIGHT NOW. BUT 90-DEGREE THE MEN'S BOBSLED TEAM. NBC5'S BRIAN COLLERAN HAS MORE FROM SOME á20-22 OLYMPIANS, HOPING TO QUALIFY FOR MILAN-CORTINA. AND YES, THEY'RE áALREADY TRAINING ON ICE. TEAM USA'S BOBSLEDDERS COULD HAVE A LEG UP ON THE COMPETITION, HEADING INTO THE QUALIFYING SEASON. <nat from practice> WITH YEARS OF TRAINING. IN ALL FOUR SEASONS. <SAMó1603 Frankie Del Duca/USA Bobsled> <12;29;48;22 we have a bobsled on wheels that we call the push track. We'll start that early on in the off season, maybe June, June, July. 12;29;58;04> BUT PRACTICING A WINTER SPORT IN 90-DEGREE HEAT? <SAMó1601 Josh Williamson/USA Bobsled> <12;15;43;00 This is the new ICE House facility. It's still relatively new, it's from 2021. and it's probably the best thing that we have to offer here in the US for bobsledding. 12;15;51;13> IT'S NOT A PROBLEM FOR ATHLETES, LIKE JOSH WILLIAMSON AND FRANKIE DEL DUCA... WHO SPEND THREE DAYS A WEEK AT MOUNT VAN HOEVENBERG'S "ICE HOUSE" IN LAKE PLACID. <SAMó1601 JOSH> <12;15;51;14 It's how we train all summer, but really one of the most important parts of the bobsled race, which was the start 12;15;56;08> <BUTTED> <SAMó1603 Frankie Del Duca/Bobsled Driver> <12;32;41;26 it's got to be the best in the world. 12;32;42;29> THE 19-80 WINTER OLYMPIC VENUE IS HOME TO THE ONLY REFRIGERATED INDOOR FACILITY IN THE U-S, WHERE ATHLETES CAN PRACTICE "PUSH STARTS" ON THE ICE. LETTING THEM TRAIN ACCURACY... FOR THOSE áCRITICAL FIRST SECONDS AT THE BEGINNING OF A RACE. <SAMó1603 Frankie Del Duca> <12;32;56;20 we can't take runs in the summer. The track just isn't open. So to have ice at all and to have the sleds ready for us to use this early, it really is setting us up for success. 12;33;07;29> BUT IT'S NOT JUST THE EQUIPMENT... THAT GIVES THE <SAMó1601 JOSH WILLIAMSON> <12;20;07;21 we kind of are always cherry picking a specific build an athlete who is fast and powerful. So our training reflects that. 12;20;13;02> MANY OF THE ATHLETES DISCOVERED BOBSLEDDING LATER IN LIFE. IMGó3571?> <nat of sprints> CARRYING OVER SKILLS FROM <SAMó1601 JOSH> <12;23;40;15 I was a lacrosse player, played a little football. 12;23;42;29> JOSH GOT HIS START IN 2017, AT A TEAM USA SCOUTING CAMP. <SAMó1601 JOSH> <12;23;44;26 I was always chasing kind of strength and size in the weight room, but I was always naturally fast. So it was almost this kind of intersection of for me. 12;23;50;25> FOR FRANKIE, A BOBSLED DRIVER... HE SAYS IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT SPEED. <SAMó1603 FRANKIE> <12;34;57;01 in college, one of our track coaches tried out and he mentioned it to a group of people that were like Hey, you know, if you guys kind of like going fast, you like working hard, you like a little bit of speed, a little danger, and you don't see yourself doing track or something after you ought to try out 12;35;13;14> A NEW SPORT... WITH SPACE TO SUCCEED... <SAMó1601 JOSH> <12;23;55;28 I thought sport was kind of over for me and but I thought do something. I just didn't know what that was. 12;24;00;21> TURNED OUT TO BE áMORE THAN A PATH TO THE OLYMPICS. <SAMó1601 JOSH> <12;24;13;15 I initially came into it because of those physical things I was chasing. now I've fallen in love with the <SAMó1603 FRANKIE> <12;37;36;02 I went to a rookie camp and it never left. I showed up with like a week's worth of clothes and then had to RIGHT NOW, THE ATHLETES ARE BEING TESTED INDIVIDUALLY. THEN IN OCTOBER, THEY'LL RACE EACH OTHER AND PICK A NATIONAL TEAM. IT'S NOT UNTIL JANUARY..

It's reaching close to 90 degrees in Lake Placid, New York, but that didn't stop some of America's top bobsledders from training on ice. The facility, known among the athletes as the "ice house," was built in 2021. It's the only refrigerated indoor facility in the United States where bobsledders can practice push starts — the first few seconds when the sled takes off. " one of the most important parts of the bobsled race," said Josh Williamson, a braker for Team USA. "The ice house is probably the best thing that we have to offer here in the U.S. for bobsledding."Many men's bobsled athletes are built for this kind of training, carrying skills from sports they did before they discovered bobsledding. For Williamson, it was football and lacrosse."We are always cherry picking a specific build, an athlete who is fast and powerful," Williamson said. "I did some ski racing, I did some car racing."Williamson and Del Duca both discovered bobsledding at different training camps. In 2017, Williamson won Team USA's Next Olympic Hopeful — a program that aims to discover the next generation of Olympic athletes. Del Duca heard about tryouts from his college track coach. "I was always drawn to speed and power," Del Duca said. "I think I'm predisposed to that a little bit."The Olympic team has yet to be decided. Right now, Williamson and Del Duca are training among some of the top U.S. athletes. In October, they'll race each other to determine the national team, and in January, teams will find out if they've qualified for Milan-Cortina. Both Williamson and Del Duca competed in Beijing in 2022, but their relationships to bobsledding have grown beyond Olympic dreams. "I initially came into it because of those physical things I was chasing. Now, I've fallen in love with the sport itself," Williamson said.
