This will be the first matchup between the two schools. Both have played in this bowl game, but only when the game was under a different name.

Since its beginning in 1990, the Pop-Tarts Bowl has had several names, including the Cheez-It Bowl and the Camping World Bowl, both of which Iowa State has played under Matt Campbell. The Hurricanes have played in this game six times, most recently losing 37-34 in the 2020 Cheez-It Bowl to Oklahoma State.

Miami appeared destined for the College Football Playoffs for most of the season, starting 9-0 and being ranked as high as No. 4 in the AP Poll. But the team lost two of its final three games to fall out of contention.

When Miami has struggled this year, it's been due mostly to its defense. The Hurricanes have allowed teams to score 45 (Louisville), 42 (Syracuse), 38 (California), and 34 (Virginia Tech). Of Miami's last eight opponents, only two failed to score 28 or more points.
