Johnston siblings donate 1,500 first aid kits to low-income families across Iowa
vlog EIGHT NEWS AT TEN. A PAIR OF JOHNSTON SIBLINGS IS HELPING TO INCREASE ACCESS TO BASIC MEDICAL CARE ACROSS OUR STATE. THIS IS SO SMART. vlog ABIGAIL CURTIN IS IN STUDIO TONIGHT TO TELL US HOW THE BROTHER AND SISTER DUO ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE. ABIGAIL. WELL, FOR YEARS, BROTHER AND SISTER CHRIS AND MILLY SATTY HAVE HAD A SHARED INTEREST IN MEDICINE. BOTH TELL ME THEY HOPE TO GO INTO THE FIELD WHEN THEY’RE OLDER, BUT UNTIL THEN, THEY’VE WORKED TOGETHER TO EXPLORE THAT PASSION AND GIVE BACK IN SMALL WAYS, IN TURN MAKING A BIG DIFFERENCE. MILLY AND CHRIS SATTY HAVE ALWAYS LIKED GIVING BACK. THAT’S WHY THE SIBLINGS STARTED THEIR OWN NONPROFIT IN 2023. AT JUST 16 AND TEN YEARS OLD. BUT RATHER THAN GIVE FOOD OR CLOTHING, THEY CHOSE A MORE CLINICAL ROUTE. PEOPLE PROVIDE FOOD, WATER AND SHELTER TO THEM, BUT THEY DON’T PROVIDE SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS LIKE A MEDICAL KIT. THEY CALL IT THE PURE KINDNESS FOUNDATION. WE CHOSE IT UP HERE IN THEIR BASEMENT. THEY COMPILE MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO CREATE FIRST AID KITS FOR THOSE IN NEED. THEY’VE PARTNERED WITH ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS THE STATE TO PROVIDE BASIC SUPPLIES TO TREAT MEDICAL ISSUES LIKE CUTS, SCRAPES, SWELLING, AND MORE. IT’S NOT EASY WORK EITHER. CREATING THESE KITS INVOLVES REGULARLY DRIVING TO MINNESOTA TO PICK UP THE SUPPLIES FROM ANOTHER HEALTH NONPROFIT MATTER NGO. BUT JUST RECENTLY, THAT WORK PAID OFF WHEN THEY HIT A NEW MILESTONE. 1500 KITS DONATED. WE FOUND OUT WE WERE OVERJOYED THAT WE COULD HELP THAT MUCH BECAUSE THAT’S LIKE WHEN YOU PUT IT INTO PERSPECTIVE. THAT’S JUST SO MANY FAMILIES. EVEN THOUGH MILLY WILL GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL NEXT YEAR, NEITHER SIBLING SAYS THEY PLAN ON STOPPING. BOTH HAVE DREAMS OF EXPANDING PURE KINDNESS INTO OTHER STATES. WE WANT TO DONATE MORE. MAYBE HIT THAT 2000 MARK IF WE CAN IN THE NEXT YEAR. BUT UNTIL THAT DAY COMES, THEY’LL KEEP PACKING. HELP, HOPE AND HELP ONE KIT AT A TIME. NOW, I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S MORE INCREDIBLE HOW MUCH OF AN IMPACT THESE KIDS HAVE HAD OR HOW WELL THEY GET ALONG. ME AND MY BROTHER WERE NOT LIKE THAT AT THAT AGE, BUT TO HELP THEM MAKE AN EVEN BIGGER IMPACT. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THIS STORY ON vlog.COM FOR WAYS TO SUPPORT THEM. OH, ABIGAIL, GREAT STORY AND CHRIS AND MILLY. WA

When siblings Millie and Krish Sethi were just 16 and 10 years old, they knew two things: they both wanted to go into medicine when they were older, and they wanted to give back to Iowa's neediest communities. That drive led them to create the PureKindness Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit aimed at making basic medical care more accessible."People provide food, water, even shelter to them, but they don't provide something as simple as medical care," Krish said. In the basement of their Johnston home, they compile medical supplies, like gauze, tweezers and ice packs, to make first aid kits capable of treating basic injuries, such as cuts, scrapes and swelling. It's not easy work. Creating the kits involves regularly driving to Minnesota to pick up the supplies from another health nonprofit, Matter.ngo. But the pair just hit a milestone in their service: 1,500 kits donated. "When we found out, we were overjoyed that we could help that much," Millie said. "When you put it into perspective, that's just so many families."Even though Millie will graduate from high school next year, neither sibling plans on stopping. Both have dreams of expanding PureKindness into other states. "We want to donate more," Millie said. "Maybe hit that 2,000 mark if we can in the next year."But until that day comes, they'll keep packing help, hope and health one kit at a time. For those interested in learning more about PureKindness, you can find them on social media here.
