Rossen Reports: Do 'vaccine passports' track your location?
Here's what we know about the first state's vaccine passport program. Spoiler: It doesn't track you.
People are wondering if vaccine passports could be the key to returning to normal activities or if they're an invasion of privacy.
Here's what to know.
Think of a vaccine passport like a real passport. When you want to go somewhere, you need a passport to prove who you are and that you're allowed to go. With a vaccine card, you're showing you've received a vaccination.
It’s causing major controversy. The federal government says it won’t be putting a national vaccine passport into play. Florida, Idaho and Texas won't require vaccine passports there! Some governors say they infringe on personal freedom and privacy.
“It's completely unacceptable for either the government or the private sector to impose upon you the requirement that you show proof of vaccine to just simply be able to participate in normal society," Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said.
But right now, most states could allow it. Hawaii revealed plans to allow vaccinated travelers to bypass mandatory quarantine upon arriving to the state. People who are fully vaccinated would be able to avoid testing and quarantine by uploading vaccination documents to the Safe Travels Program.
Several tech companies are developing apps as well.
Walmart is making vaccination records digitally available through the Health Pass by CLEAR app.
This is so people vaccinated at Walmart and Sam’s Club can easily access their vaccine status as needed.
Some apps are being created for air travel. More than 20 airlines are experimenting with vaccine passports. The International Air Transport Association is working with apps called Travel Pass and CommonPass. Right now, you can use the CommonPass app on a limited number of United flights from Germany to the U.S. and to skip the screening line when traveling to Aruba.
So how do they work? Vaccine passports live on your phone. New York is the . It’s called the .
Want to go to a Brooklyn Nets game at Barclays Center or a Rangers game at Madison Square Garden? They want you vaccinated or to test negative for COVID-19.
Show them your personal QR code to prove it and you’re in!
The Excelsior Pass says you can get it if you:
- Have been fully vaccinated in the State of New York and it has been 14 days or longer since your final shot, or
- Have had a PCR test administered in the State of New York in the last 3 days and the result was negative, or
- Have had an antigen test administered in the State of New York in the last six hours and the result was negative.
- Have not tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 10 days.
The Excelsior Pass says it doesn’t track your location or store anything else about your health records. It just stores your first name, last name and birthdate and if you’re safe to enter.
Another big controversy concerns people that don’t have smartphones. Most of the apps say you can get a pass online and print it out. Now, remember, even if the state — even if the government doesn’t require it — private businesses and venues may. Or they’ll require some sort of proof of a vaccine or a negative test. That’s why you’re encouraged to keep your vaccination card from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and take a picture of it so you have it in your phone.
