Although mountain lions are considered common in some parts of Utah, a dog standing up to one isn't as ordinary.
But it's what happened in Cedar Hills, Utah, when a dog named Ella sacrificed herself to protect her family.
Crystal Michaelis that her children were playing outside when Ella, a hunting dog, started acting strangely.
"She kept looking at the kids and then quickly looking back and she just kind of was very cautious. And my daughter thought it was very concerning," Michaelis said.
Apparently, Ella had spotted a mountain lion in the yard at that time, but a confrontation between the two animals didn't take place until the family went inside.
Eventually, Michaelis heard Ella at the door, along with blood all over the patio.
The cuts on Ella's head, nose, tongue, legs and neck — more than 30 in total — are only on the front of her body, "which means she never let down and stayed in that protective stance and defend it," Michaelis said.
Wildlife resource officers, who are trying to locate the mountain lion, say deer in the area may have attracted it into Ella's territory.
Ella is expected to make a full recovery and Michaelis said she's thankful for her heroic actions.
“[She] definitely can't be replaced, that's for sure," she said.
