Senators will return to Washington Monday as the government shutdown enters its sixth day, with no budget agreement reached and both parties entrenched in their positions. The Senate will consider two competing measures Monday afternoon to reopen the government, but neither is expected to pass after a weekend of little to no progress.Meanwhile, President Donald Trump continues his threat of federal worker layoffs, but declined to answer when and which federal agencies could start cutting workers. "I call them Democrat layoffs," the president told reporters Sunday. "We're doing better than the country has ever done, and the Democrats hate seeing that. It's up to them. Anybody laid off, that's because of the Democrats."With current furloughs and the possibility of layoffs expected to escalate tensions, senators still have no apparent plans for further negotiations. Bipartisan talks last week did not result in a breakthrough, as Democrats and Republicans continue to accuse each other of drawing out the shutdown."We can't when Chuck Schumer keeps voting to shut the government down for political reasons," House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, said in an interview Sunday. "That's purely and simply what's happening here.""Johnson doesn't want to discuss the real issue, the health care crisis facing the American people, so he puts up all these fake lies to try and divert attention," Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, also said Sunday. "And so we ought to be talking about the real issue here, which is that we have a health care crisis in America caused by the Republicans."The shutdown fight centers on Democrats' demands to renew health insurance subsidies and reverse cuts to Medicaid. Republicans have rejected those demands, insisting on passing a temporary budget to buy more time for negotiations.Watch the latest on the government shutdown:
