EACH YEAR, THOUSANDS OF YOUNG IOWA GIRLS BUILD COURAGE, CONFIDENCE AND CHARACTER THROUGH THE GIRL SCOUTS. THERE’S A TROOP IN CENTRAL IOWA. ALSO BREAKING SOME BARRIERS. vlog’S JODI LONG INTRODUCES US TO TROOP 535. IN THIS WEEK’S PROJECT, COMMUNITY HIGH. AFTER A LONG SUMMER, TROOP 535 IS BACK TOGETHER. THERE YOU GO. AND IT’S LIKE NO TIME HAS PASSED AT ALL. I KNOW HER. YOU KNEW HER? YEAH, BECAUSE SHE WAS MY FRIEND. TOGETHER, THESE FRIENDS ARE LEARNING THE VALUE OF LISTENING AND FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS. WE’RE GOING TO FOLD IT. CUTTING AND CREATING. WORKING ON AND MAKING A BOAT. IT HAS A FENCE RIGHT HERE. BUILDING BOATS. NINE YEAR OLD JIMENA HOPE DOESN’T SINK THE GLUE. YES. THANK YOU. OKAY. HOPE IT STICKS. I HOPE IT STICKS. A MESSY PROJECT YOU MIGHT NOT EXPECT WOULD BRING THEIR TROOP LEADER TO TEARS. GOSH, I. FEEL SO HONORED TO BE A PART OF THEIR LIVES. THEY’RE SO SPECIAL TO ME. I’M GOING TO TRY NOT TO GET EMOTIONAL. TROOP 535 IS IOWA’S ONLY BILINGUAL TROOP. YEAH. WE ARE. YEAH. THE MAJORITY OF THESE GIRLS SPEAK SPANISH AT HOME AND ARE FINDING THEIR VOICE HERE. THEY UNDERSTAND AND RECOGNIZE HOW DIFFERENT THEY ARE FROM THEIR GIRL SCOUT SISTERS. LIKE JUST ONE. ONE FROM THE OTHER. AND THEY CELEBRATE THAT. GIRL SCOUTS SAYS THERE IS ALWAYS A NEED TO BETTER CONNECT WITH FAMILIES WHOSE FIRST LANGUAGE ISN’T ENGLISH. THIS TROOP OFFERS CULTURAL SIMILARITIES. ITS TROOP LEADER SPEAKING TO THE GIRLS AND THEIR PARENTS IN SPANISH. DE HACERLA EL FUEGO. I THINK THE PARENTS ESPECIALLY FEEL VERY COMFORTABLE BEING ABLE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE, AND IT ALLOWS THEM TO ENGAGE MORE WITH THEIR GIRLS LIVES AND THEIR ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES. TEACHING YOUNG GIRLS LIFE SKILLS AND VALUABLE LIFE LESSONS. NOT GOING TO GIVE UP THE SAME WAY GIRL SCOUTS HAS DONE FOR DECADES. I BET IF YOU KEEP TRYING, YOU CAN GET IT. NEVER GIVE UP. THAT’S RIGHT. GIRL SCOUTS SAY IT’S EXPANDING ITS BILINGUAL PROGRAM TO MARSHALLTOWN AND THROUGHOUT THE DES MOINES AREA.

Each year, thousands of young Iowa girls build courage, confidence and character through Girl Scouts. There is a troop in Central Iowa also breaking barriers. Troop 535 celebrates culture as the state's first and only bilingual troop.At the group's first meeting of the school year, troop leader Marlu Abarca greets the girls and their parents with a friendly, "Hola!" For the majority of girls in the troop, Spanish is their first language, including Abarca. "I think the parents, especially, feel very comfortable being able to express themselves in their own language," she says. "It allows them to engage more with their girls' lives and their activities."Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa says it's intentional about better connecting with families whose first language is not English. Abarca says this way, parents can be involved while the girls can embrace their heritage in a fun way with friends."I think this really goes to show that representation matters for the girls," she explains. "So the fact that the girls can see someone their same age who also has parents who speak Spanish at home, and it normalizes it for them."The troop is getting attention from outside the state. Abarca says she has heard from other troop leaders considering starting their own bilingual troops. "I love that other people are learning to embrace other all-girl scouts."Currently, Troop 535 has a waitlist. Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa says its short-term bilingual outreach programming is expanding.
