Actress and advocate Gabriela Fuentes is launching Proyecto Echoes Migrantxs, Des Moines' first-ever Spanish-speaking theater program. Her mission is to create a safe space for Latino adults to engage with the arts in their native language.
"I always say theater is the activity that makes my heart happy," Fuentes said. "It's so into our nature as human beings."
Fuentes, an actress and migrant from Bolivia, has studied how theater can be used as a social tool to improve communication. When she noticed a lack of Latino representation in film and theater, she wondered, "Where are they?"
The program is gaining attention and helping participants like Rocio Gonzalez, who is from Mexico, reconnect with their roots while making new connections in the community.
"It was the first time I've ever seen anything like that since I've lived in the U.S.," Rocio said. "I love it. I love Spanish, my mother language. It's like going back to school for your favorite subject."
In this inclusive program, everyone plays a role, regardless of experience. Fuentes asks for a six-week commitment and an open mind.
Not only is Fuentes shedding light on the lack of representation, she is also acutely aware of how challenging it can be to find an adult theater program. With life's many challenges, Fuentes makes it part of her mission to encourage men and women with full-time jobs, families and busy lives to take part in this program if their passion is theater.
As an incentive, every performer gets paid for their time and dedication, an undertaking that Fuentes is taking on herself.
Fuentes encourages people to try new things and step out of their comfort zones. At the end of the program, participants perform at the Stoner Theater, offering the community a front-row seat to something new and fostering connections that might not have happened otherwise.
"Speaking another language is just learning from another culture, learning from your neighbor and just trying to be more empathetic," Fuentes said.
