Fast-growing text message scams cast a wide net
An increasingly common scam is casting a wide net, and con artists are hoping you fall for it.
One scam text claims an Amazon account has been suspended.
The goal of these scam texts is to get you to click on the link in the message. If you do, any number of bad things can happen. Your device or your personal information may be compromised.
This scam text has a few warning signs.
One of them is a long line of gibberish at the top that appears to be the sender's address.
The message also contains bad grammar. One sentence says, "We've suspend (sic) your Amazon account due to unusual activity." A later sentence says, "Our system has suspend (sic) your Amazon account for security reasons."
The Federal Trade Commission on Monday issued yet another warning about the growth of scam text messages.
The FTC is estimating that this year, for the first time ever, the number of scam text messages will exceed the number of scam phone calls being made in the U.S.
These scam texts are using the names of many well-known companies.
The simple advice is this: Do not click on links or respond to unexpected texts.
