Members of the United Cajun Navy from Louisiana are deployed to Jamaica as the island nation braces for a catastrophic hurricane. Brian Trascher, the vice president of the United Cajun Navy, says their response overseas has to be limited due to safety reasons. Despite this, three members of the non-profit's advanced response team are boots on the ground. The team specializes in search and rescue efforts. An additional six members will fly to Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa passes. Nonprofits and airlines are teaming up in order to ship out cargo that will be necessary to rebuild and help families in the aftermath. Trascher says the United Cajun Navy is stocked with supplies due to a calm hurricane season in the states. However, Hurricane Melissa is pummeling the small island nation with life-threatening storm surge and causing power outages that are expected to last for weeks. Trascher fears supplies may run out fast due to the devastation expected."We have a volunteer sign-up form, like I said, it is going to be limited. They can donate if they are able to. These international operations are really experienced: moving cargo, moving personal security, things like that," he said.Donations to the United Cajun Navy can be made here.
