Caught on camera: Horse rescued from deep canal
VIDEO SHOWS THE MOMENT A HORSE WAS RESCUED FROM A CANAL AFTER GETTING TRAPPED OVER THE WEEKEND. ARI HAIT JUST SPOKE WITH A LOCAL COLLEGE STUDENT WHO RUSHED TO THE HORSE’S AID UNTIL MORE HELP ARRIVED TO SAVE THE ANIMAL. THIS HORSE’S NAME IS ALICE, AND HER OWNERS TELL ME SHE MUST HAVE GOTTEN SPOOKED BY SOMETHING BECAUSE SHE CAME BOLTING OUT OF HER YARD DOWN THE DRIVEWAY THROUGH THIS GATE AND THEN HEADED OFF DOWN THE ROAD HERE A LITTLE BIT. BUT FOR SOME REASON WOUND UP FALLING OVER THE SIDE HERE ABOUT 15 TO 20FT DOWN INTO THE CANAL. AND THAT IS WHERE SHE GOT STUCK. RIGHT, GIRL? ALICE IS NOW BACK IN HER BARN. BACK WHERE SHE BELONGS. BUT THAT WAS DEFINITELY NOT THE CASE. KEEP GOING. ON SUNDAY, WHEN PALM BEACH COUNTY FIRE RESCUE HAD TO BE CALLED OUT. GOOD GIRL, ALICE, TO PULL ALICE FROM A CANAL NEAR HER HOME IN LOXAHATCHEE GROVES. AIDAN MURRAY WAS THE ONLY ONE AROUND WHEN ALICE TOOK OFF. A NEIGHBOR KNOCKED ON THE DOOR TO LET HIM KNOW HIS HORSE WAS IN THE CANAL. NO SHOES ON. I RAN OUT THERE AND LO AND BEHOLD, MY HORSE WAS OR OUR HORSE WAS NECK DEEP IN THE CANAL, WATER NECK DEEP AND STUCK. ALICE IS 28 YEARS OLD. A LITTLE ARTHRITIC. SHE WAS NOT GOING TO CLIMB OUT ON HER OWN. AIDAN SAYS. ALICE WAS BREATHING, NOT PANICKING, SO HE SETTLED IN TO WAIT FOR FIRE RESCUE TO ARRIVE. I WAS JUST WATCHING HER TO MAKE SURE THAT SHE DIDN’T DIP HER HEAD UNDERWATER OR SHE WASN’T IN TOO MUCH PAIN OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. ALL RIGHT, LET’S GO. FIREFIGHTERS SEDATED ALICE AND USED SOME ROPE AND A LOT OF MUSCLE. HERE WE GO. KEEP GOING, GENTLEMEN. GOOD JOB. KEEP IT UP. TO PULL ALICE OUT OF THE CANAL. IT TOOK SOME TIME, BUT ALICE WAS EVENTUALLY SAFE. AS SOON AS YOU GUYS ARE READY, LET’S GO. ONE MORE LAST HOLE INTO THE GRASS AND BACK HOME, SAFE AND SOUND. WE’VE KNOWN HER SINCE SHE WAS BORN, SO SHE’S VERY IMPORTANT TO OUR FAMILY. AND I’M GLAD THAT THINGS TURNED OUT ALL RIGHT IN THE END. AND ONE MORE LOOK NOW AT JUST HOW STEEP IT IS INTO THIS CANAL. THE BEST PART OF THIS STORY, AS YOU SAW ON THERE, ALICE, IS DOING PRETTY WELL. JUST A FEW SCRAPES, A COUPLE OF SCRATCHES AND A GREAT STORY FOR HER OWNERS TO TELL IN

Her adult son, Aiden, was the only one in their home when Alice got loose. A neighbor knocked on the door to let him know his horse was in the canal.

“No shoes on, I ran out there and, lo and behold, our horse was neck deep in the canal water,” Aiden said.

Aiden said Alice is 28 years old and arthritic. He knew there was no way she’d be able to climb out on her own.

But he also saw that she was breathing fine and not panicking, so he settled in to wait for Fire Rescue to arrive.

“I was just watching her to make sure she didn’t dip her head under water, or she wasn’t in too much pain or anything like that,” Aiden said.

Once firefighters arrived, they consulted with the Murrays to figure out the best way to get Alice to safety.

In the end, they decided to sedate the horse and then use some rope and a lot of muscle to pull her out.

Alice is back in her barn now having only suffered a few scrapes and scratches.

The Murrays say this is the first time she’s ever done something like this. They hope it’s the last.

“We’ve known her since she was born, so she’s very important to our family,” Aiden said. “And I’m glad that things turned out all right in the end.”
