White House: ‘Agenda working’ as Trump swaps out top labor stats official
The White House celebrated new figures showing inflation held steady in July and moved to install new leadership at the agency that produced them.
Karoline Leavitt, the White House Press Secretary, said, "The America First economic agenda is working."
The Bureau of Labor Statistics released data showing Prices fell for groceries and fuel, but increased for imports like furniture, shoes, and tires.
On Monday, President Donald Trump E.J. Antoni, chief economist at the conservative Heritage Foundation, to serve as BLS commissioner.
Antoni would replace Erika McEntarfer, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden and by Trump earlier this month after the July jobs report showed slower hiring and steep downward revisions to previous months’ gains. Trump accused McEntarfer, without evidence, of manipulating jobs data for political purposes.
We asked Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt if Americans can trust the inflation numbers based on the president's accusations on jobs numbers.
"Look, the jobs data has had massive revisions. We want to ensure that all of the data, the jobs data, the inflation data, and data that is coming out of the BLS is trustworthy and accurate, which is why the president has restored new leadership at the BLS," Levitt said.
Antoni suggested in an interview last week of scrapping monthly jobs reports in favor of quarterly releases, arguing that revisions have undermined public confidence.
Its monthly reports on jobs, wages, and inflation shape decisions at the Federal Reserve, influence interest rates and financial markets, and guide businesses on hiring, pricing, and investment. Shifts in its data can move billions of dollars in markets and affect how Americans feel about the economy.
