"This hasn't been on my bucket list, to make it to 100," said Smith.
Turning 100 wasn't something Smith planned for. At 17 years old, he boarded the USS Satterlee. Smith said the ship fired the first shot during the Battle of Normandy.
"That's something I'll always remember," he said.
Smith's role is one France has not forgotten. At the end of May, he'll return to the country to be honored.
Smith said he is the last survivor of his 275 shipmates. He said they would often take trips to France to mark the somber anniversary.
"It's kind of strange when you get back over, I always look for somebody familiar, but it's a little tougher to find every year," Smith said.
Friends and family gathered to celebrate Smith and make him feel like a hero once more.
"It's just amazing at his age how he still gets around. I'm 92 and I don't know if I can keep up with him," said Lt. Col. Jim Parson.
Smith's life stretched beyond the battlefield. He lost his wife of 74 years a few months ago. He said the key to his long life was his wife.
"I had a good wife now," he said. "She took real good care of me."
Smith said the biggest lesson he learned during his career in the Navy is to always make your bed. He said it's help you accomplish something as soon as you start your day. He said he still makes his bed every morning to this day.
