The beginning of the year is always an important time if you’re in the market for a new . All the major TV-makers announce the next year’s new TVs at CES in January, then February has multiple major sales events where retailers try to sell as many TVs as they can before those new models come out, including the Super Bowl and Presidents Day. While there are always new features in each successive wave of TVs, getting a great TV on sale is often worth it to forgo the newest, shiniest options that will roll out in the spring and summer. If that’s your plan this week, I’ve picked out a few of the most exciting TV deals in the run-up to Presidents Day.
I’ll be keeping an eye on the sales, too, with updates as new deals pop up (or sell out) ahead of the holiday.

The Expert: I’m a Senior Commerce Editor for Popular Mechanics, Runner’s World, and Best Products, where I research and test the best things you can buy. Prior to joining PM, I was a technology and gaming critic for 10 years, with bylines at Popular Science, PCMag, Gizmodo, IGN, and Digital Trends, among others. I’ve eyeballed my fair share of TVs, and just about every kind of computer/console/streaming device that you’d plug into them.
Shopping Presidents Day TV Sales: What to Consider
Picking a TV can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. If you want to get into the nitty gritty, scouring for sharpest contrast and widest color gamut, that is a highly technical rabbit hole that’s absolutely fascinating… And will likely lead you to buy a specific set, rather than chasing down a good deal. Right now, though, we’re shopping sales: That means picking the best of what’s on offer. That said, you should not compromise too much, either: Here are a few things I recommend keeping in mind.
Pick the TV that fits your home
Believe it or not, there is actually a right and wrong answer to the age-old question, “what size TV should I buy?” According to (SMPTE), your TV should take up between 30 and 40 percent of your field of view when sitting directly in front of it. There are two things you can adjust to create that range: The size of your TV and the distance between your TV and your seat.
Since most people don’t rearrange their furniture to fit their TV, that means you should pick the size of your TV based on how far you sit from it. The SMPTE says your TV’s height (not diagonal) should be approximately one third the distance between the screen and the viewer. Personally, I’d say you’re better off popping it into a TV size calculator like this one from and it will tell you what you need.
And if what you get isn’t a standard TV size? Round up a bit. (I know I’d rather be a bit overwhelmed, than underwhelmed, y’know?)
To OLED or Not to OLED
If you have the budget, I recommend looking for an or Hybrid OLED (QD-OLED) TV. Organic Light-Emitting Diode, or OLED, is a display technology that creates better color and contrast: Rather than using LED lighting elements behind the panel like in an LED TV, each pixel in an OLED TV lights up individually, and can be turned off individually. This creates a “true black” when the screen is dark and creates a sharper, more vivid picture.
OLED TVs will, across the board, be more expensive than standard LED or enhanced QLED TVs, but I generally think the improved picture quality is worth the extra scratch.
