‘You hurt my child’: Des Moines mother pleads for justice after daughter shot
A Des Moines mother is pleading for justice after her 16-year-old daughter was shot in the face Sunday — allegedly by the mother’s fiancé, who is still on the run.
“You hurt my child, and I need justice,” said Jacorra Jones, whose daughter, Mya Buie, remains in the hospital awaiting multiple facial reconstruction surgeries.
Police have identified the suspect as 28-year-old Kevin Fajardo. Investigators say Fajardo shot Buie inside their Hubbell Avenue apartment before fleeing the scene. Police warn that he is dangerous and urge anyone with information to call 911.
Jones said Fajardo appeared to be under the influence before the shooting and that she told her daughter to get the family’s car keys when chaos erupted.
“When she goes down, I just hear a commotion,” Jones said.
Moments later, she saw her daughter gravely wounded.
“He shot her and I see my baby — her face was split open,” Jones said. “Her whole chin was gone. She was just leaching blood, and I couldn’t help her.”
Buie survived and has begun to speak and move again just days after surgery. Her mother says that strength gives her hope — but not peace.
“I’m tired of walking around like it’s okay when it’s not okay,” Jones said.
The shooting is part of an ongoing investigation. As part of its Wanted Wednesday initiative, Des Moines police are sharing information about Fajardo online. The campaign has helped locate about 60 percent of featured suspects since it began earlier this year.
