VIDEO: 100-year-old golfer who still plays 9 holes a week gets birthday surprise on the green
Pearl Atwood, a dedicated golfer from Hatfield, Pennsylvania, celebrated her 100th birthday with a surprise party on the green.
Atwood, who has been playing golf for 50 years, still enjoys nine holes every week.
"Always take a practice shot," she said as she talked to WPVI about how her love of golf began.
She went on to say, "I just love golf. My husband, he was a wonderful golfer. He said, 'We have to go out (golfing)" when I retire.' I said, 'OK, I'll be brave and I'll learn it.'"
Atwood reminisced about her family, saying, "I had a family, I had three children, and they're in heaven, and my husband's also in heaven."
She said she and her husband would go golfing four times per week.
"I used to play 18 holes, but I cut down to nine now. Every Wednesday, I feel blessed that I can do this," Atwood said.
At the celebration of Atwood's birthday were 60 other women who regularly golf at Twin Woods Golf Course in Hatfield, which is outside of Philadelphia.
"We're having a cake and I've gotten a trophy for her commemorating being 100 years old and still playing nine holes of golf," said Betty Johnston, the owner of Twin Woods Golf Course.
"It's overwhelming and a beautiful experience," Atwood said of the birthday surprise.
Atwood has no plans to stop hitting the links.
"As long as Jesus will or God would let me live. I'll play as long as I can," she said.
