100 degrees! Des Moines sets new record high temp for Aug. 23
It's official: This heat wave is a record-breaker in Des Moines.
According to the National Weather Service, we hit 100 degrees at 3:19 p.m. Wednesday at the Des Moines International Airport.
That breaks the previous daily record for Aug. 23, which had stood at 99 degrees since 1975.
Thursday's forecast calls for another 100-degree day, but if we hit that mark in Des Moines, it'll still be below 1936's record of 104 on Aug. 24.
on Tuesday set a new record for Aug. 22, as did Waterloo's temperature of 98. Tuesday's high temperature of 96 fell 2 degrees short of a daily record in Des Moines.
The hottest August day ever in Des Moines was recorded in 1918 when temperatures hit 110.
