Search warrants reveal new details in hay rack ride crash in Keokuk County
Search warrants have revealed new details in a hay rack ride that crashed near What Cheer in October.
Twenty-nine kids were on the ride, and the crash sent three students to the hospital.
In a search warrant, investigators wrote they believed the cellphones of Daniel Brubaker and David Heady Jr. would reveal information about the consumption of alcohol and the conspiracy to mislead investigators about what happened leading up to the crash. Brubaker was driving the pickup truck that was pulling the gooseneck trailer.
Court documents say the pickup lost control and entered a ditch. All the kids on the ride were thrown from the trailer.
The search warrant says Brubaker left the scene before first responders arrived and was in contact with his wife after the crash and after he left the scene.
The search warrant also identifies Heady as the passenger in the pickup and says he was "highly intoxicated when law enforcement arrived." Heady was a Keokuk County deputy at the time of the crash, but has since resigned.
Right now, Brubaker and Heady do not face any criminal charges.
Investigators said they are pulling data from their phones that night.
